Whitewashed Windmill in Rainy Greek Temple

by Bradley Khan

Flat noon light floods the scene, turning the whitewashed stone walls of the Mykonos windmill into a bright, reflective surface. Light rain falls steadily, coating the plaster in a slick sheen that shifts the color from stark white to pale gray. Rows of glass lanterns hang from the arches of the surrounding temple precinct, their domes dotted with water droplets that catch the overhead glare. Dark stone slabs on the ground have absorbed the moisture, creating deep, glossy pools that mirror the lanterns and the windmill tower. Wooden slats on the windmill blades hold beads of water, dripping onto the wet pavement below. Arches recede along the sides, forming strong leading lines that direct the view toward the central structure. The edge of the nearest archway cuts sharply against the wet stone floor.
