Wet Quay in Istanbul

by Esmeralda Morton

Rain-slicked cobblestones in Eminönü reflect the pale, diffused first light, creating a mirror-like surface that doubles the view of a weathered stone quay wall. One rusted iron tool hook protrudes from the damp masonry, holding a heavy brass ladle that catches the ambient glow. Beside it, a chipped blue enamel bowl rests on a wooden crate, its faded glaze against the wet gray stone. In the background, ivy vines rest on the crumbling facade of a centuries-old building, their dark green leaves glistening with moisture. A solitary rattan chair sits abandoned near the water’s edge, its weave soaked and heavy.
