Under the harsh, flat glare of a Mumbai afternoon, a narrow service lane reveals a makeshift washing station built against a peeling lime-wash wall. A cracked white plastic wash basin sits precariously on two stacked red bricks, its interior stained with the gray slurry of soap residue and wet hair. Beside it, a dented aluminum kettle reflects the blinding sky, while a faded blue plastic bucket catches runoff into a floor drain clogged with lint and debris.
