Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast midday, a row of closed beach umbrellas leans against the stucco wall of a Mission Bay waterfront café, their striped canopies muted in gray and white. A lone figure in a rain-slicked jacket pauses near the entrance, checking a watch while waiting for a table. In the foreground, a wet pavement reflects the dull sky and the blurred shapes of passing bicycles, their tires leaving thin trails of water. The quiet interlude of a coastal afternoon, where the promise of sun is delayed by the persistent cloud cover, leaving the street furniture and pedestrians in a state of suspended activity.
