Viking Longship Torch Parade Loja Waterfront
by Dorothy Cruz
Bright midmorning light reflects sharply off the calm waterfront, illuminating a Viking longship pulled onto the shore. The vessel features a high, curved prow painted in deep reds and ochres, with a single square sail furled against the mast. A procession of figures in heavy woolen cloaks lines the wet sand, carrying unlit wooden torches that stand vertically like spears. The cool season air leaves the fabric of their garments stiff and textured. Behind the ship, distant hills rise under a cloudless sky, creating layers of depth that recede into the hazy horizon. Salt spray glistens on the dark hull planks near the waterline, while the wooden oars rest in a neat row against the gunwale. The scene remains static and bright, devoid of smoke or fire, showing the structural details of the boat and the orderly arrangement of the crowd.
