First Light on Tea in Cairo

by Tyrone Harmon

Rain-slicked asphalt in downtown Cairo reflects the pale, diffused sky as a street vendor arranges crates of ripe peaches under a corrugated tin awning. Water rings stain the wooden crate lid where a metal bucket sits, its rim catching the soft morning light. A worn comb rests near a stack of faded aprons, evidence of the morning’s work. The vendor, partially obscured, pours steaming tea from a dented kettle into small glass cups, the steam rising against the damp air.
