Vendor at Blue Hour in in Tunis, Tunisia

Vendor at Blue Hour

by Jim Rosales

Under the deep indigo wash of blue hour in Tunis, a narrow alleyway glows with the warm spill from a corner grocery. A vendor stands behind a counter of chipped blue enamel, the paint worn away to reveal grey ceramic beneath decades of use. He holds a pair of metal kitchen tongs, pausing mid-transaction with a customer whose hand reaches into the frame to accept a wrapped package. The scene is busy and layered, with a coat brush leaning against a rough plaster wall nearby, its bristles stiff with dust. Shallow reflections on brushed steel condiment cans catch the ambient street light, adding sharp highlights to the otherwise soft, twilight gloom.
