Ukrainian Pysanka Painter in Jyväskylä Shrine

Reflected light from the overcast sky washes over the interior of a shrine in Jyväskylä, illuminating rows of hanging lanterns. From behind, a figure in heavy winter clothing stands before a work surface, holding a tool dipped in molten beeswax. The brief arctic summer light remains diffuse and gray, casting soft shadows against the shrine walls. The painter's hands are steady as they apply intricate patterns to a pale egg. The wax glows faintly where it meets the shell, against the cool, damp air suggested by the wet surfaces nearby. One droplet of wax hangs from the tool's tip, poised to fall.
