Trimming Mats in Singapore

Late afternoon light spills across a narrow shophouse corridor in Singapore, illuminating a row of worn rubber door mats lined up against peeling teal stucco. A resident crouches on a low plastic stool, using a rotary cutter to trim the edge of a woven mat, the blade catching the warm sun. Nearby, a ceramic bowl with blue floral patterns sits beside a glass of iced tea, condensation beading on the exterior and dripping onto the wet concrete pavement. The vertical lines of wooden shutters and the horizontal depth of the alleyway, where distant motorbikes blur past under the harsh, golden geometry of the sun.
