Tomatoes just after sunrise in Seattle

by Pablo Pearson

Just after sunrise, the low Pacific Northwest light spills across a wet Seattle street corner, catching the glossy red skins of heirloom tomatoes piled loosely in a repurposed white cookie tin on a folding vendor table. A small, dusty black table fan sits idle beside the produce, its grille reflecting the pale gray sky. Ivy vines climb the brick wall of the adjacent building, their green leaves damp with morning dew, against the smooth, waxy texture of the fruit. A few scattered tomatoes have rolled onto the metal grate of the sidewalk, resting near a puddle that mirrors the overcast light.
