Tile Sign in Budapest
by Danny Conway
A narrow alley in Budapest’s Jewish Quarter glistens under the diffuse gray light of a dusk rainstorm, where a rusted iron fire escape rests on the peeling ochre stucco of a tenement wall. Water beads and streams down the textured surface of a vibrant blue ceramic tile sign, its glossy glaze reflecting the neon glow of a nearby pharmacy cross against the matte, rain-soaked brickwork. Above, corrugated zinc roofing sheets channel runoff into a copper gutter, creating a rhythmic visual pattern that contrasts with the organic decay of the plaster below. One droplet hangs suspended from the jagged edge of a chipped ceramic shard, catching the last ambient light before falling into the puddle-strewn cobblestones.
