Rain-slicked granite steps of a tenement close to Princes Street lead up to a heavy oak door, its surface scarred by decades of Edinburgh wind. A brass door handle, tarnished to a dull gold, catches the flat winter light, against the wet stone. Beside the entrance, a small, weathered planter holds dormant winter greens, hinting at a florist’s nearby stock rather than a display. The scene is devoid of people, showing the texture of the damp pavement and the sturdy, unyielding architecture of the city. A folding ruler, left carelessly on a low wall by a passing worker, adds a touch of transient utility to the otherwise static, historic facade.
