Tea Tray in Muscat

Under the harsh, flat glare of midday, a narrow alley in Mutrah opens into a sun-bleached courtyard where a vendor balances a silver tea tray on his hip, the metal reflecting the blinding white sky. Beside him, a stack of faded dish towels hangs from a rusted wire, stiff with heat, while a chipped saucepan sits inverted on a low concrete ledge, its interior shadowed and cool. The ground is packed earth, cracked and dry, against the smooth, worn wood of a nearby bench where a coil of twine fibers rests, frayed at the edges.
