Gray dawn light falls through the thick coastal fog, softening the sharp New England architecture of a brick row house in Beacon Hill. On a wrought-iron balcony, a pair of weathered camp mugs sit beside a steaming tea kettle, their surfaces damp with condensation. Below, the street is empty and slick with recent rain, reflecting the muted glow of a distant streetlamp. One branch of bougainvillea, surprisingly vibrant against the gray, hangs over the railing, its papery flowers catching the faint light.
