Tea Service in Muscat
by Cole Herring
Under the amber wash of sodium streetlights, a roadside majlis setup spills onto the dusty pavement of Mutrah. A low plastic table anchors the scene, crowded with chipped porcelain cups ringed by dark tea stains and a glass jar of pickled limes, their brine catching the neon spill from a nearby electronics shop. A folded apron rests on a spindle chair nearby, its fabric dull in the low light. The background hums with the blurred motion of passing cars, their headlights streaking past the static group. A houseplant in a cracked pot sits precariously on the edge of the seating area, its leaves trembling slightly in the hot wind.
