A heavy steel utility door on a Chicago alleyway wall stands slightly ajar, revealing a sliver of warm interior light against the cool, misty dawn. A rusted iron latch hangs loose, its texture against the smooth, scuffed paint of the door’s lower panel. Inside the gap, a tabby cat sits perched on a windowsill, its fur glowing amber in the spill of light, watching the wet pavement outside. Condensation beads on the glass behind the cat, blurring the interior details. The mist softens the harsh lines of the brickwork, while a single pear rests on a nearby fire escape ledge, its skin dull in the gray light.
