Sweeping Slush in Sapporo

A narrow alley in Sapporo glows with the neon spill of a nearby izakaya, reflecting off wet asphalt where snow has melted into slush. A convenience store clerk in a blue uniform pauses to sweep slush from the entrance with a stiff-bristled dust brush, the motion blurring slightly against the sharp, cold light of the fluorescent sign above. Steam rises from a manhole cover nearby, mixing with the breath of a passerby in a heavy parka. To the side, a stack of cardboard boxes sits damp against the brick wall, water seeping through the grout lines into the pavement.
