Steamy Glass in Sapporo

by Toni Tyler

A narrow alleyway in Susukino glows with the cold blue of twilight, cut by the warm, saturated red of a lantern above a ramen shop. Steam rises from a vent, blurring the glass door where a chef in a white uniform presses a ladle against the counter, his reflection merging with the neon signs outside. A dented metal rim on a nearby trash bin catches the streetlight, adding a sharp, silver punctum to the scene. Folding tables are stacked precariously against the wall, waiting for the morning rush, while the wet pavement reflects the chaotic array of signs.
