Sweeping Curb in San Francisco

A San Francisco municipal worker stands on the corner of a steep Victorian block, gripping a long-handled broom to sweep debris from the curb into a metal dustpan. He wears a faded orange safety vest over a grey cardigan, the fabric wrinkled from hours of labor under the clear, bright afternoon sun. Behind him, the iconic steep pitch of the street rises, lined with painted ladies in muted greens and creams. Several pigeons cluster near his boots, pecking at discarded crumbs on the concrete. The gritty reality of urban maintenance against the backdrop of historic architecture, with the broom’s straw bristles catching the light and the worker’s focused posture anchoring the composition.
