Surreal Broom Maker Binding Sorghum in Berlin Workshop
by Aaliyah Kerr
North-window sidelight cuts across a clean workshop floor, illuminating a broom maker binding dried sorghum bristles onto a wooden handle. The artisan's hands move with deliberate precision against the rough texture of the wood and the stiff, golden fibers. Along the edges of the frame, miniature buildings the size of shoeboxes stand in orderly rows, their windows reflecting the same late-afternoon glow as the main subject. Dust motes hang motionless in the air, caught in the sharp beam of light that defines the workspace. The floorboards show natural grain patterns, and tools rest neatly on a nearby workbench. A small shadow from a tiny building falls across a wooden plank, at the base of the impossible structures in the physical reality of the room. The scene remains still, with the broom maker focused entirely on the task at hand.
