Sunset Sandbar Linking Islands Near Taunggyi

by Bette Shelton

Orange low-angle sunlight washes over a narrow sandbar stretching diagonally across the frame to connect two distinct landmasses near Taunggyi. The dry season leaves the terrain exposed, revealing cracked earth textures and sparse, brittle vegetation clinging to the sandy ridge. Thick ground fog pools heavily in the depressions between the islands, creating a soft white blanket that obscures the lower valleys while the elevated sandbar remains clear. The light casts long, sharp shadows that emphasize the diagonal tension of the land bridge against the darker, shadowed water. Fine grains of sand catch the glow on the upper surface, against the cool, misty gray of the fog below. The highest ridge of the sandbar holds a small cluster of dry grasses, their tips illuminated by the setting sun.
