Morning light cuts across the weathered limestone facade of a South Congress bungalow, illuminating a chain-link fence where a rusted garden gate stands slightly ajar. Through the gap, a concrete driveway holds a discarded paper bag and a single measuring tape coiled near the curb, remnants of a weekend project. A pair of well-worn brooms leans against the stucco wall, their bristles swept flat by the dry Texas wind. In the foreground, a ceramic bowl overflows with fuzzy nectarines, their orange skins catching the low sun, while a glass bottle of water sweats condensation onto the warm pavement.
