Bright early afternoon light cuts through the open skylight of a Montreal Metro station, casting a sharp, horizontal sun stripe across the vertical steel rail of the turnstile barrier. The metallic surface reflects the pale blue of the sky and the muted grey of the concrete ceiling above. Commuters in heavy wool coats move past the barrier, their faces blurred by motion or obscured by scarves, typical of a brisk day in Quebec. The raw, industrial aesthetic of the underground transit system, with its exposed pipes and tiled walls, at the base of the image in the specific architectural reality of Montreal public infrastructure during the 1970s.
