Street-side Eatery in Tainan
by Zoey Powell
A narrow alleyway in Tainan’s old city district stretches under a flat, overcast sky, the light diffused and shadowless. The walls are clad in cracked painted stucco, peeling to reveal layers of faded ochre and green beneath. A small, open-fronted eatery occupies the left side, its counter cluttered with a metal dish drainer holding wet ceramic bowls and a stack of blue and white porcelain plates, their glaze reflecting the dull daylight. Behind the counter, a woman in a simple apron works, her hands moving near a pot lid propped against a stack of bamboo steamers. The pavement is damp concrete, slick with recent rain, leading toward a distant intersection where a bicycle leans against a utility pole.
