Street Reflections in Alexandria
by Sofia Hardin
Rain slicks the cobblestones of the Corniche at dusk, blurring the neon reflection of a nearby kiosk into long streaks of electric blue and amber. A fisherman in a yellow slicker leans against a rusted bollard, wiping condensation from a glass of tea while steam rises in thin, chaotic ribbons against the gray sky. In the foreground, a discarded plastic bag caught on a chain-link fence flutters violently, its crinkled surface catching the dim ambient light. The wet pavement mirrors the silhouettes of palm trees and distant minarets, creating a distorted, shimmering undercity. A lone motorbike speeds past, its taillight leaving a red smear across the wet asphalt, showing the cold, damp chill of the Mediterranean evening.
