Street Morning in Delhi
by Sam Mosley
Rain-slicked asphalt reflects the pale, diffused grey of a Delhi morning, where a chai wallah stands behind a stainless steel cart, wiping condensation from a glass. A striped towel hangs loosely from a handle, dripping onto the wet pavement, while steam rises from a large pot, softening the sharp edges of nearby brickwork. The cart’s surface shows wood grain darkened by years of use, against the slick metal and the vibrant red of a plastic stool nearby. String lights remain unlit against the overcast sky, their wires tangled above, as a passerby in a white shirt pauses, holding a paper cup, their reflection distorted in a puddle near the cart’s base.
