Stone Spiral Staircase in Restored Train Terminal

by Angel Bond

Pale limestone steps curve upward in a tight spiral within the high vaulted ceiling of a restored train terminal in Pinar del Río. Indirect midmorning light bounces off the whitewashed brick walls, filling the shaft with a soft, even glow that eliminates harsh contrasts. The rough texture of the stone contrasts with the smooth, painted metal railings that follow the curve. Deep, quiet shadows nestle in the crevices between the treads and the central column. Seasonal transition is visible in the dust motes suspended in the light beams and the slightly worn edges of the steps. The composition relies on the relentless upward rhythm of the stairs to guide the gaze from the dark lower landing to the bright upper archway. One shadow falls sharply against the pale wall at the base of the final turn.
