A narrow stairwell in Valparaiso glows under the sodium-orange spill of a streetlamp, illuminating peeling pastel paint in faded turquoise and rose on the curved concrete steps. A local vendor pauses to adjust a stack of woven baskets near a rusted iron railing, their rough texture against the smooth, wet sheen of recent rain on the stone. Above, a single bedside lamp flickers on in a small apartment window, casting a warm, rectangular pool of light that reflects off a polished brass doorknob on the ground floor landing. Faint fingerprints smear the metal handle, evidence of the day’s end, while a ceramic coffee mug sits abandoned on a nearby ledge, steam long gone.
