Steaming Mochi in Tokyo
Mist rests on the narrow alleyway in Yanaka, softening the sharp edges of traditional machiya wooden facades and sliding shoji screens. A lone vendor, bundled in a thick woolen coat, stands beside a steaming street cart, his breath visible in the cold dawn air. He uses a wooden paddle to flip mochi on a flat griddle, the steam rising in thick white plumes that mingle with the fog. Beside him, a stack of bamboo steamers sits open, revealing rows of white rice cakes. The wet asphalt reflects the dull orange glow of a distant streetlamp, while a red noren curtain hangs limp in the damp stillness, marking the entrance to a small shop.
