Spring Rolls and Dipping Sauce on Picnic Blanket
by Jack Ibarra
Golden-brown spring rolls lie in neat rows on a woven tray, their crispy skins catching the soft bounce of noon light. Beside them sits a small bowl of amber dipping sauce, its surface smooth and still. The tray rests atop a patterned picnic blanket spread over a floor, the fabric showing faded reds and blues that speak of early autumn wear. Pale walls surround the setting, reflecting the bright, flat glare of midday into the space. A window frame casts a sharp diagonal line of shadow across the corner of the blanket, at the base of the arrangement. The texture of the fried dough contrasts with the smooth ceramic of the sauce bowl, while the woven threads of the blanket create a rough, tactile base beneath the food. One crumb lies near the edge of the tray, marking the abundance before the meal begins.
