Spice Vendor Sharpening Knife at Dawn in Anyang
by Erica Gibson
Soft overcast light from the late autumn dawn illuminates a spice vendor's table in Anyang, where a vendor sharpens a knife against a wet whetstone. Piles of dried chilies, star anise, and turmeric root in vibrant reds, browns, and yellows surround the work area, their textures rough and powdery against the damp wood. Humid air rests on the scene, evidenced by the glistening sheen on the stone and the darkened grain of the wooden counter. The vendor's hands move rhythmically, guiding the steel blade back and forth, creating a fine line of metal shavings. Behind the primary figure, rows of stacked sacks and hanging bundles of dried herbs recede into the distance, forming layers of depth that fade into the soft gray morning. at the edge is one drop of water rolling slowly down the edge of the spice jar, merging with the dust of turmeric on the table surface.
