Soap Bubbles in Palermo

Under the harsh midday sun of a Palermo courtyard, a young boy in a faded soccer jersey balances precariously on the edge of a stone basin, blowing thin, iridescent soap bubbles that drift toward a wall of cracked ochre stucco. The sunlight catches the rainbow sheen of the bubbles against the rough, peeling paint, creating a fleeting play of color. Behind him, a rusted metal gate stands ajar, revealing glimpses of hanging laundry and terracotta roof tiles typical of the neighborhood. The boy’s expression is one of intense concentration, his mouth pursed as he watches the fragile spheres float away, momentarily suspended in the dry, hot air before popping against the warm, textured surface of the ancient building.
