Snow and Sunlight at Zanzibar Flower Market Dawn
by Lynn Holland
Wet droplets rest on the rough brown paper as a vendor wraps vibrant pink peonies beside a gleaming fish counter. The scene splits sharply: the left half glows under bright, golden sunrise rays that dry the wet pavement, while the right half remains lit by cool, gray morning light where white snowflakes drift down onto the vendor's shoulders and the market stalls. Rain mixes with the falling snow, creating a slick sheen on the concrete floor. Wooden crates stacked with colorful produce sit under the dual lighting, their shadows stretching in opposite directions. The vendor's hands move quickly, contrasting the impossible weather, while the fish scales on the counter reflect the sharp, warm light on one side and the soft, diffused glow on the other. One snowflake rests on the edge of a plastic tray holding fresh ginger.
