Smoke Falls Like Liquid in Napier Polling Gym

Thick gray smoke descends vertically from a high ceiling vent, pooling on the gymnasium floor like heavy, viscous black ink rather than drifting upward. Rows of wooden bleachers fill the space with late autumn silence, their surfaces worn by years of civic use. In the foreground, a small crowd gathers near a metal speaker mounted on a wall, their faces illuminated by soft, diffused morning light filtering through high windows. The air remains clear of heat haze, yet the substance falling from above creates a surreal, liquid river that distorts the floor tiles beneath it. Shadows stretch long across the polished wood, at the base of the impossible flow in a rigid, institutional geometry. at the edge is the way the dark, falling smoke rests on the bottom edge of the metal speaker grille.
