Skater Landing Triple Axel Varkala Roadside
by Dawn Avila
Bright open light floods the wet roadside near Varkala, where a figure skater in a dark costume lands a triple axel with arms pulled tight against the torso. The ice surface beneath the blades is a patch of frozen water, cracked and uneven, surrounded by saturated green grass and puddles reflecting the clearing sky. Rain-soaked palm fronds hang heavy on the embankment behind, dripping water onto the asphalt shoulder. The skater's boots bite into the white surface, kicking up fine spray that hangs in the humid air. Sweat glistens on the athlete's neck, against the cool, damp texture of the frozen rink. A discarded plastic bottle rests on the grass nearby, its label faded by the recent downpour. The skater's shadow stretches long across the ice, ending abruptly at the edge of the frozen patch.
