Silhouetted Spice Trade on Cape Town Canal

Deep indigo twilight clouds hang low over the V&A Waterfront canal, pressing against the darkening sky. Wooden boats float side by side, their hulls barely visible as black shapes against the fading water. Vendors stand on narrow planks, reaching out in silhouette to exchange burlap sacks of spices. Piles of red paprika and yellow turmeric sit on the vendor's table, glowing faintly where the last light catches the rough fabric edges. The foreground dissolves into soft, out-of-focus green leaves from overhanging reeds. Shadows stretch long across the wet wood of the docks. One wooden oar rests against the boat's gunwale, reflecting the dim sky. The rough texture of the spice sacks contrasts with the smooth, dark water below.
