Steam rises from a ceramic mug on a scarred wooden table inside a modest Vancouver cafe during the cool early morning hours. A small terrier rests quietly under the table, its leash coiled loosely on the floor nearby. A silver spoon and fork lie beside a half-eaten croissant, while a recipe tin sits open near the window, pages fluttering slightly in the draft from the door. Outside, the gray light of dawn falls through rain-streaked glass, illuminating the wet pavement of the street where a few pedestrians hurry past, umbrellas tilted against the damp air.
