Shaping Clay in Marrakech

by Garrett Wiley

A narrow alleyway in the Medina opens to a sun-drenched courtyard where a local potter stands before a low wooden workbench. He wears a faded indigo djellaba, his hands coated in wet clay as he shapes a large terracotta bowl. Behind him, a sun-warmed stone wall glows with intense ochre light, casting deep geometric shadows from the nearby lattice window. A faded blue towel edge drapes over a rusted iron rail, catching the breeze. On the bench, a few unfinished porcelain jars sit beside a simple clay plate, their surfaces still soft.
