Dusk settles over a bustling Edinburgh street, the sky a bruised purple above wet granite pavement that reflects the neon glow of a nearby pub sign. Under the corrugated awning of a fishmonger, a vendor in a yellow waterproof mac wipes down a stainless steel counter, steam rising from a pot of boiling mussels. Rain beads on the glass front, blurring the passersby with umbrellas into streaks of color. Inside the shop window, jars of pickled herring sit beside a vintage brass scale, their contents glowing under the warm tungsten bulb. A customer in a red coat points at a display of fresh haddock, the fish’s silver scales catching the light against the dark, damp interior.
