Under the harsh, flat white light of a Yucatan noon, a street vendor stands behind a corrugated metal cart in Merida, his face partially obscured by the brim of a frayed straw hat. He holds a large, translucent blue plastic watering jug, tilting it to rinse bright orange nectarines in a chipped enamel basin. The water splashes over the fruit, catching the sunlight and dripping onto the vendor’s stained apron. Behind him, the bright yellow stucco wall of a colonial building is pitted with age, against the smooth, wet skin of the citrus.
