Resting Cat in Muscat

Under the harsh, flat glare of Omani noon, a narrow alley in Mutrah is choked with activity as a vendor balances a heavy wooden crate of bright green limes against his hip. The fruit skins glisten with beads of water, catching the white light and revealing their porous texture against the deep red of his faded shirt. Behind him, a stack of white plastic canisters leans precariously against a whitewashed wall, their surfaces bleached by the sun. A stray cat, sleek and dark, slips silently between the vendor’s legs and a pile of woven palm fronds, its eyes narrowed against the brightness.
