Repairing Scooter in Phuket
by Kathy Irwin
Under the harsh clarity of a Phuket afternoon, a mechanic crouches beside a rusted Honda scooter parked on a faded teal concrete porch. Sunlight bleaches the white walls of the shophouse behind him, casting sharp, geometric shadows that cut across a scattered workbench. An adjustable spanner rests open on a oily rag near his hand, its steel glinting against the dull metal of the engine block. A terracotta plant pot holding a sprawling bougainvillea sits precariously on the edge of the counter, its magenta flowers spilling over the rim and dropping loose petals onto the scattered tools. An orange cat sleeps curled on a stack of spare tires nearby, completely indifferent to the repair work happening inches away.
