Repairing Engine in Accra

by Taylor Sweeney

Damp dusk settles over a Korle Bu Market alley where a mechanic crouches by a disassembled engine block, his heavy leather work gloves resting on a slick, oil-stained tarp. Beside him, a plastic tool caddy sits open, its metal socket wrenches catching the pale, diffused light filtering through the corrugated iron roof. Rain beads on the rusted latch of a nearby steel cabinet, mirroring the wet sheen on the asphalt. A half-eaten plate of fufu and stew sits abandoned on a nearby bench, untouched by the sudden downpour, while distant neon signs from a nearby bar bleed red and blue across the puddles.
