Red Feed Bins in Somali Hog Pen Corridor in in a poultry house aisle in Somalia

Red Feed Bins in Somali Hog Pen Corridor

by Mary McCormick

Cool blue twilight from the rainy season fills the aisle of a concrete poultry house in Somalia, meeting the harsh white glare of overhead fluorescent tubes. Two bright red feed bins line the left wall, their smooth plastic surfaces reflecting the mixed light sources. The swept concrete floor shows faint scuff marks along the corridor edges, leading toward a wire mesh fence at the far end. Low concrete walls bound the narrow passage, keeping surfaces clean and free of debris. Dust settles on the upper rims of the red bins, resting against the sharp paint. A metal latch on the nearest bin catches a specular highlight, marking the boundary between the utility of the equipment and the stillness of the empty space.
