Pupusas and Curtido on Tea House Tray

by Carly Gillespie

Flat noon light floods the north window, casting sharp, quiet shadows along the walls of the Maceio tea house. A white ceramic plate holds three thick, golden-brown pupusas, their surfaces slightly puffed and textured with faint grill marks. Beside them sits a small mound of curtido, a crisp mix of shredded cabbage and carrots glistening with a light vinegar dressing. The food rests on a woven tea house tray, its natural fibers catching the bright, directional sunlight. The turn of seasons is visible in the pale, dusty green of the cabbage and the warm, earthy tones of the corn dough. The tight framing isolates the meal, showing the rough grain of the bread against the smooth, wet vegetables. One shadow falls across the rim of the plate, at the base of the dish in the stillness of the room.
