Protesters with Umbrellas at Yangon Polling Station Dusk in outside a polling station entrance near Yangon

Protesters with Umbrellas at Yangon Polling Station Dusk

by Joanne Ortiz

Deep shadows swallow the foreground where broadcast cables drape across paper notices pinned to a wire fence. Beyond this clutter, a crowd gathers outside a concrete polling station entrance near Yangon. Dozens of colorful umbrellas rise like a mosaic against the fading sky, their edges catching a thin rim of twilight light. Handmade signs with bold lettering are held aloft, their surfaces textured with marker strokes and tape. The dry season air leaves the ground dusted with pale sand and scattered leaves. Faces remain obscured by the angle of the light and the canopy of umbrellas, yet the density of the group creates a solid wall of civic presence. One paper notice flutters at the edge of the frame, its corners torn by the wind.
