Protecting Skewers in Kyoto
by Nolan Weaver
A narrow Kyoto alleyway glistens under the heavy, diffuse gray of a dusk rainstorm, the wet asphalt reflecting the neon glow of a nearby izakaya sign. A local vendor in a translucent blue plastic raincoat stands beside a wooden cart, using a paper fan to shield a small cluster of steaming skewers from the drizzle. The steam rises in thin, tangled ribbons, dissolving into the damp air. In the background, the dark silhouette of a machiya house with its characteristic lattice windows looms, while a few pedestrians hurry past with umbrellas, their shapes blurred by the falling water and low light. The quiet resilience of street life against the encroaching night.
