A narrow passage in Nyhavn opens to a canal where flat noon light washes over the facades of colorful 17th-century townhouses. On a wooden dock, a fisherman’s wife sits on a weathered step stool, peeling potatoes into a metal basin. Beside her, a porcelain jar holds sprigs of dill and garlic, while a grease sheen on a nearby kettle lid catches the dull sky. In the background, a fountain spray arcs over the water, misting the sun-bleached canvas of a moored boat.
