Preparing Tea in Beijing

A narrow Beijing alleyway glows under the harsh amber of a sodium streetlamp, illuminating a makeshift tea station set up on a folded wooden table. A chipped enamel tea kettle steams gently, its spout releasing vapor into the cool night air, while a stack of paperbacks rests precariously beside a patterned dish towel. An older man in a thick wool scarf leans over the table, his hands busy arranging small ceramic cups, the warm light catching the crazed glaze of a majolica plate nearby. Behind him, the dark silhouette of a traditional courtyard gate stands in contrast to the modern neon sign flickering across the street, creating a layered view of daily life persisting in the shadows.
