Predawn reptile care calcium dust tray
by Jude Parsons
Dim aquarium glow washes a white plastic tray filled with fine white calcium powder, resting on a dark grooming table in a Changsha retail bay. The predawn darkness presses against the windows, leaving only the cool blue-green spill of tank lights and a faint orange retail bulb to illuminate the scene. A human hand enters the frame from the right, fingers gently pressing into the dust, preparing a reptile for handling. The surface of the powder shows soft ridges from the touch, against the smooth, slightly worn edges of the tray. Shadows pool in the corners of the room, settling heavily around the base of shelving units holding reptile supplies. The air remains still, visible only in the way the light catches the fine particles hovering near the tray's rim. One reflection of the blue tank light glimmers on the wet edge of the tray.
